- The sagebrush buttercup produces ranunculin, which breaks down into a toxic oil called protoanemonin. This compound can cause skin irritation, blisters, burning, and itching. If ingested, it can lead to vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weakness, and dizziness. Severe cases may result in tremors and seizures.
- The plant’s toxic oil can also irritate the eyes, leading to redness and discomfort.
