- Winter cherry contains a toxin called solanocapsine, which is present in both the leaves and berries. The highest concentrations of this dangerous compound are found in the berries.
- Ingesting the leaves or berries can cause mouth and throat irritation, stomach cramps, hypersalivation, and vomiting.
- Severe poisoning from winter cherry may result in symptoms such as muscle spasms, respiratory problems, and paralysis.
