- The leaves and seeds of the Texas mountain laurel contain the toxin cytisine, a quinolizidine alkaloid. High concentrations of this toxin are found in the seeds and are released when chewed.
- Ingesting these toxic parts can result in symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and a decreased heart rate in dogs.
