Risks
- The sago palm contains a highly toxic substance called cycasin, which is found in all parts of the plant. The seeds contain higher concentrations of cycasin than the fronds, making them particularly dangerous. Approximately 50% of ingestion cases involving the sago palm in animals can result in fatality.
- Side effects from consuming sago palm may include vomiting, excessive thirst, jaundice, and bloody feces. If left untreated, poisoning can lead to severe complications such as seizures and liver failure.
- Symptoms of sago palm poisoning in dogs may appear as quickly as 15 minutes after ingestion, although in some cases, it may take several hours for symptoms to manifest.
