- The ornamental pepper is part of the nightshade family, which is notorious for producing the toxin solanine. All parts of the plant are toxic to dogs, with the berries being the most poisonous.
- Ingesting ornamental pepper can cause gastrointestinal issues, including abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it may lead to heart arrhythmia, paralysis, and seizures.
- Chewing on the leaves and berries of ornamental pepper can irritate a dog’s mouth and airways.
