Although electrolytes made for humans are not poisonous, their formulations are unsuitable for dogs due to excessive sugar and sodium. In some cases, they can harm dogs, make dehydration worse, and cause electrolyte imbalance.

  • Electrolytes formulated for human consumption are not recommended for dogs. Electrolyte drinks like Gatorade and Powerade and electrolyte solutions like Pedialyte contain high sugar and sodium content which is harmful to dogs.
  • Electrolytes for humans tend to have higher levels of sodium and sugar. Their formulation does not match the canine electrolyte balance requirements. In some cases, giving electrolyte drinks to dogs can worsen the electrolyte imbalance and dehydration.
  • Diabetic dogs should not be given electrolytes made for humans because of the high sugar content.
