Can dogs have Kumis?

can dogs have kumisNo

Overview

dog-food-safety-information

No. Dogs should not drink kumis. Even though it contains only a small amount of alcohol, it can still be toxic to dogs, especially in larger quantities. On top of that, kumis is high in lactose, which many dogs can’t digest well, leading to stomach upset or more serious health issues. It’s safest to keep kumis off your dog’s menu.

Risks

health-risks
  • Traditional kumis is made by fermenting mare or donkey milk, but cow or goat’s milk is used as an alternative. Kumis contains lactose and the levels tend to be higher if it is made with mare’s milk. Kumis might cause adverse effects to dogs with lactose intolerance.
  • Kumis is considered a low alcoholic beverage as the fermentation process makes it produce ethanol. Although its alcohol percentage is only around 1-3%, kumis may cause poisoning in dogs if consumed in large amounts. Note that distilled kumis tends to have a higher alcohol percentage.
