Although cat food is not toxic, it’s not a balanced food for dogs. Allowing your dog to eat cat food is likely to cause him digestive issues. Long-term consumption could lead to nutritional imbalance.

Benefits
- Cat food lacks some nutrients that are necessary for a dog's health. However, cat food may be an alternative food for dogs that need to gain weight or suffer from muscle wasting and poor appetite. However, only do so with a veterinarian's approval.
Risks
- Since cats are obligate carnivore, their diet is largely meat-based. The high protein content of meat can be harmful to dogs with sensitive gastrointestinal tract. Because cat food is too rich, it can cause digestive issues such as diarrhea in dogs.
- Too much protein can overwork the kidney and liver. Dogs suffering from kidney and liver disease should never be given cat food.
- Overweight and obese dogs and those at high risk of developing pancreatitis should not eat cat food to prevent pancreatic inflammation.
