- There are many varieties of hibiscus sharing similar appearances; though most of them are non-toxic to dogs, the most commonly grown variety is the Chinese hibiscus, also known as Rose of Sharon, is toxic. When ingested in any parts of the plant, it can cause loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting in dogs.
